Leia, Princess of Alderaan Reveals Connections to The Last Jedi

This post contains spoilers for Star Wars: Episode XIII – The Last Jedi.

Imagine having the weight of a planet on your shoulders at 16 years old. In Leia, Princess of Alderaan, Star Wars fans finally get more backstory of Leia’s life on Alderaan and her ascension to being crowned heir. Along with the challenges she faces, she begins to uncover her parents’ plans to resist the Galactic Empire. Leia then has to choose whether to be part of the Resistance or to protect her planet.

This novel, written by Claudia Gray, was released as a part of the “Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi” book series, so it is marketed as having hints for the next Star Wars film which will release on December 15, 2017. While it’s highly recommended you buy this book for Leia feelz (of which there are many), we’ve got some definite and possible connections to discuss.

Characters

CONFIRMED: AMILYN HOLDO

Amilyn Holdo Star Wars - 6 Nerdy Chicks

  • Laura Dern was cast as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo for the film, but in the book, Amilyn is a Gatalentan girl who’s in the Apprentice Legislature with Leia. She definitely comes off as the Luna Lovegood of this universe: she’s wacky, colorful, and lovable. It’ll be interesting to see whether this lasts into her adult life, especially if she’s a Vice Admiral. Amilyn may also be the Captain Jack Harkness of this universe as well. She mentions to Leia that falling for only humanoid males seems limiting. Perhaps we’ve got our first pansexual character in the Star Wars Universe?

POSSIBLE: WA-2V

  • Leia, Princess of Alderaan introduced a grooming droid named WA-2V, who’s kind of like the Mulan song “You’ll Bring Honor to Us All” personified. All she’s programmed to care about is making her charge look presentable for all occasions. Though her personality is limited, she could make for a humorous cameo, perhaps in lecturing Rey about her signature hairstyle or squawking at BB-8.

Locations

CONFIRMED: CRAIT

  • In the trailer for the movie, there’s a gorgeous shot of speeders flying over a snow-covered planet and kicking up the red land underneath. That’s not snow after all: according to the book, Crait is a small salt-covered planet with red land that served as a Resistance base. It may serve as a Resistance base once again.

POSSIBLE: ARREYAL

  • This was a planet described as having a radiation source beneath the surface, so the Empire commandeered it to power factories. It was originally a separatist planet in the Clone Wars, which is why it was targeted by the Empire in the first place. In The Force Awakens, the Starkiller base was blown up, so the First Order will have a power problem. This may be where Arreyal could come into play, or it could be the spot of a Resistance uprising, given its history.

Themes

All themes have to be put in the possible category because little is known about The Last Jedi’s plot.

POSSIBLE: DECEIT

  • In Leia, Princess of Alderaan, Leia begins to learn how to deceive those who could endanger her. For her to be a successful politician, this type of lying is necessary and nuanced. Though Rey is likely not going to be a senator, she may have to learn how to do this to be successful as well. And she’s got the perfect mentor for it!

POSSIBLE: DEFINITION OF SELF

  • Like any 16 year old, Leia struggles to define who she is in the novel. She’s a princess who must put her planet first, but she’s also a teenager who likes a guy, but she also wants to fight against Palpatine’s tyranny. While Rey comes from a vastly different backstory, she’s also struggling with how to define herself, especially with her newfound knowledge of the Force. Luckily, Luke and Leia could potentially guide her through this.

It’s going to be a long three months before fans get answers to all of their questions. Luckily, lots of new merch was released for the new movie, including a Captain Phasma book with even more hints and all the Porgs your creature loving heart could ask for. In the meantime, if you’ve got any Stars Wars: The Last Jedi theories to add, please share in the comments!
