Why We Love Halloween

Here at 6NerdyChicks, we typically never feel the need to explain ourselves or our antics. However, Halloween is just one of those things that we all love so much that we decided to close out this Halloween season with an explanation of why we all love it. And if you love it too, perhaps you can relate! Let us know why you love Halloween in the comments!

My favorite thing about Halloween is the fact that it kicks off the most festive and cheery season! Think about it: you’ve got Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, and then New Year! Once we hit October, all the decorations start going up and everything is so fun and festive, but the decor and festivities don’t end with Halloween! This is also particularly my favorite time of year to go to Disneyland because, again, so many festivities! Yes, I love the candy and the costumes too, but for me it’s just a great launch to a time of the year when everything is just more decorated and more fun!

My favorite part about Halloween is that it’s an excuse to be more open about my true crime obsession. Everyone’s already watching horror movies and reading King novels again this time of year –  why not start talking about the Night Stalker in casual conversation? This actually did happen to me at a fancy dinner I went to earlier this month, and it turned out this person not only shared this obsession, but has seen at least two serial killers at the prison she used to work at. True crime brings everyone together, guys. If you’re looking to get into this fandom, I’ve been listening to the My Favorite Murder podcast literally this entire month, and it’s fantastic.

I love the Halloween movies! My husband and I wait all year to watch movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Haunted Mansion, and Hocus Pocus. One of our favorite Halloween traditions is carving pumpkins with The Nightmare Before Christmas in the background. We are also a family that believes TNBC is equally Halloween and Christmas. I think watching these movies brings out the nostalgia for the holiday as both of us have families who loved Halloween when we were kids. We watched these movies when we were little, and we still love watching them as we grow older.

I love clever costumes! Yes, I spent my share of my early-20s wearing “sexy versions” of witches, ladybugs, and Sarah Palin, but I truly appreciate the clever costumes that make you say, “Dammit! I should have thought of that!!” This year I saw a sexy Slimer, an iconic Sephora bag, a reference to an infamous casual friday mishap, a joke about our current immigration policies, and a lady using her pregnant belly to take on the worst Simpsons character ever (just kidding). While my costume for this year is done, I’m definitely looking forward to trying out a clever costume next year!

Listen, there’s nothing in the world cuter than a pet wearing human-like clothing. 364 days out of the year I’m called a weirdo for dressing up my pets, but on Halloween, it’s finally socially acceptable. Therefore, my favorite thing about Halloween is seeing dogs and cats wearing adorable costumes. I’m already a sucker for most 4 legged furbabies, but if you stick them in a pumpkin hat, it’s suddenly the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Send me all your photos of your pets dressed up in costumes, friends – I’ll appreciate them more than you’ll understand.

Writer, Editor, and Liaison for 6NC, Melody is a jack of all nerdoms but master of none probably because she has a weird dislike for watching things she’s already watched since there are so many new things to watch! Melody enjoys anime, indie games, books, and sci-fi, and when she’s not at home binge watching a show or gaming, she can usually be found at Disneyland.
